6 common traits of horrible bosses
6 common traits of horrible anfhreresWhile in a perfect world your babo would be a magical combination of friend and mentor, youre very lucky if you land a gig where thats the case. For the most part, bosses are just fine. Some are just mediocre and more or less tolerable. Some are good and make work a nice place to be every day. googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) But then, in rare instances, you come across a boss whos trulyawful. A terrible boss can ruin your life and derail your career. Do you despise your relationship with your boss and wonder if maybe youre overreacting? Read on for 6 of the most common awful boss behaviors. If you recognize more than 2 of these, it might be time to look elsewhere for work to save your sanity.1. They micromanage every little task.Bosses are supposed to hire people they trust enoughbased on their skills and experienceto do the job theyre hired to do. Then, theyre supposed to leave you a bit of room to a ctually do your job, rather than breathing over your shoulder and confusing thingsor just stressing you out. A good boss eases up and lets you fly. A bad boss attaches himself to your every move, all the time.2. They always take leistungspunkt for others successes.Taking credit for the ideas of others is never a good habit. Its especially vile in a boss, who is supposed to nurture their employees and help them achieve. If your boss likes to claim the credit for something you had a heavy hand in and bask in the glow of accolades after a success, that means shes getting in the way of your limelight. Its bedrngnis just unfair, its detrimental to your career.3. Theyre never satisfied with anything. No matter how many expectations you meet or succeed, its never enough for your boss. She finds a way to demean your efforts or to belittle them. Shes always wanting more. There never seems to be any room for positive feedback or recognition because the goalposts are always moving. If you stick around too long, your self esteem is going to drop dangerously low.4. They constantly manipulate you, but never enough to cross a line.Often, a terrible boss comes to understand just how much criticism you can handle without snapping, breaking, or quitting.and sticks to that limitagain and again. He knows if she takes too much from you too fast, youll simply quit. But if he beats down your self worth and builds you back up, again and again, you might stay. Dont.5. They hoard the knowledge and the power.Everything flows through your boss. All things are CC-ed. He has his hand in every project. And, most importantly, he is the only one with enough knowledge to see the big picture, or the whole scope of a project. If you and your team members are laboring in the dark, chances are your boss is keeping you there.6. Theyre easily threatened.Anytime your bosss authority is tested, she flips out. This is not normal behavior for a boss, particularly if that threat is just someone having an idea, or a conversation that doesnt include her. Horrible bosses see other peoples successes as their losses. If your boss flies off the handle whenever shes not 1, youll find yourself trying to hide your accomplishments, which isnot a way to build a career. Consider talking to human resources, requesting a transfer, or looking for a new gig if possible.

4 Reasons Q2 is the Best Time to Find a New Job
4 Reasons Q2 is the Best Time to Find a New Job Searching for a job is a major undertaking, but knowing when to look can make the process play out mora smoothly. While the adage that the best time to look for a job is while you already have one still rings true, the next best time is Q2. If you plan on moving onto greener pastures, here are 4 reasons why the best time to look for a job is Q21. Theres less competition for jobs than in Q1.While you may have a gut reaction to take the new year, new me, new career route, searching for a job in Q1 can put you in competition many other experienced people in your field. Employees who want to change jobs often stick it out their with their current job until the end of the year to earn holiday bonuses and enjoy paid holiday days that employers commonly provide. This means that many people who have experience in the workforce choose January to search for something new. Avoid the Q1 new employment scramble and hold off on your search.2. Compani es are activelyrecruiting.Because college graduation happens in the spring, many companies advertise for job openings during Q2. While this does mean that there will be more people on the search, it also means that there are more job postings publicly visible, so you wont have to search as hard to find openings. You can also stay ahead of the recent grad rush by applying early into Q2. Unlike applying for jobs in Q1, your competition is less likely to have as much work experience.3. Theres a greater sense of urgency to hire.Have you ever been in a situation where it takes you months to go through the interview and hiring process? Completing an initial interview, follow-up interview, and new hire paperwork sometimes takes weeks to complete when there is no sense of urgency. This is where the time saving bonus comes in when applying during Q2 people want to leave for vacation Though of course things vary from company to company, most companies would rather push candidates through and c omplete the process before leaving for the trips they have planned in the spring and summer. Filling the position quickly means that hiring managers and human resources workers can breathe a little easier instead of worrying about completing the sometimes extensive process of bringing someone in when they get back. Less feet dragging from companies means that youre more likely to hear responses and complete on-boarding more quickly.4. Companies have hiring momentum and money in the hiring budget.Because employees are more likely to leave during the beginning of the year and positions need to be filled in the early months, theres still energy to bring in new team members. Those responsible for hiring are still on their A game and working hard to secure great talent. There is also still likely money in the hiring budget, so companies are able to bring people in, and having more money in the budget also increases the likelihood of starting with a higher salary.Obviously, there are nuan ces that vary from career to career. If you are considering entering the job hunt, ask people in your field if there is a time of year that has the best outcome. For instance, jobs in education or hospitality can have different schedules for the best time to search. When searching for a job, doing a little bit of homework can go a long way. And hopefully, that long way will carry you to a job before Q3.--Kayla Heisler is an essayist and Pushcart Prize-nominated poet. She is a contributing writer for Color My Bubble. Getting ready for the big night A great night to network From Your Site Articles MINDBODYs Women Tech Leaders Shared Their Journeys in NYC ... Related Articles Around the Web MINDBODY, Inc. One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a p ivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the wertzuwachs of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction C raft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in comba ting gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

How to find motivation at your lowest point
How to find motivation at your lowest pointHow to find motivation at your lowest pointWhether its achieving a target at work, losing a certain amount of weight, or saving money for your dream purchase finding motivation can be incredibly difficult at the most important times. Although many challenges come with a physical battle, conquering a lack of motivation and overcoming personal hurdles undoubtedly begins within our own minds. Our thoughts often determine whether or not we can find inner motivation and having even the slightest of doubts can stop this from happening. One afternoon belastung week, sitting outside enjoying the glorious summer sunshine, we spoke with Ben Edwards, a self-confidence expert and relationship coach, who gave us his tips on how to find motivation even at your lowest point.Begin the day rightIf youre someone who sets 10 alarms with a 2-minute gap to help persuade you to get up, dont. Set one alarm and push yourself out of bed. This will immediately trigger your mental ability to conquer a small barrier. Having an extra 20 minutes of time to either get ready, make food or perhaps participate in a quick exercise session will leave you feeling fresh.Another useful tip is to leave your phone across the room not on your bedside table. This encourages you to get up, move and stretch instead of rolling over and checking social media. If you can successfully tackle the first task of your day, it will inevitably put you in a good mood and motivate you to achieve further targets.Create a visionFor many, seeing the potential outcome of hard work, such as driving a dream car or being in a personal office, can spark motivation. Visual thoughts allow you to create the scenario in which you imagine yourself and no doubt about it, this will feel good. Pair this with a podcast or up-beat music playlist and youll feel like Rocky before his final fight. Its also important to think positively although this is easier to say than do, having doubts in the b ack of your mind will impact your motivation. Challenge these head on with a more proactive attitude.Write your goals downFrom completing simple tasks such as arranging an appointment, to yearly goals of reaching a certain milestone, write down anything you wish to complete. Putting this somewhere that you often pass or can easily glance at will give you gentle reminders to not give up. Having a angewohnheit list also allows for a visual representation of how many tasks youve completed, giving immediate feedback. The feeling of removing something from your list can fuel ambition to conquer the next.Dream big with small actsWhen motivation is at an all-time low, reassess the situation and begin small. Doing an hourly workout five days a week or arriving to work 30 minutes early each day isnt a realistic goal early on. Instead, take small steps and constantly improve. A quick 5-10 minute workout each morning with a gradual increase as the weeks pass will be more beneficial to your men tality. Begin to put yourself into a routine and stick with it. Do tasks at a similar time in the day until your mind locks it down.Remember, without consistency, youll never finish start small and work your way up.Remove distractionsA big part of the battle when finding motivation is removing distractions that could disrupt your workflow. In a modern age where social media has taken over lives, its difficult to avoid checking regular updates. We all know how hard it is to put our phones away for the day, so leave it in another room when youre tackling tasks. If youre in the middle of a workout, leave it across the gym/room until you finish. If youre sitting in an office completing a large task, turn your phone upside down and put it on silent productivity levels will increase, leaving you motivated to complete the next goal. This article was originally posted on YourCoffeeBreak.co.uk.

The 5 Kinds of Co-workers Successful People Know to Avoid
The 5 Kinds of Co-workers Successful People Know to AvoidThe 5 Kinds of Co-workers Successful People Know to AvoidSuccessful people often share a powerful principle, brilliantly encapsulated in a quote from entrepreneur, author, and motivational speaker Jim Rohn You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.I first heard this quote seven years ago, and it prompted me to think seriously about the people closest to me, and how they affected me. And I learned how much negative people can affect me without me realizing it.My own success increased rapidly when I took an honest look at the people around me and replaced negative relationships with positive, empowering individuals who would support and inspire me.Here are five toxic partalities you should remove from yur life immediately1. The HaterMeet the relentless complainer, the person who perpetually sees the negative in everything. The hater complains about the world, blames others for her lack of success, and cr iticize the brave souls who try to achieve something of value.Negativity is contagious, so the danger with this person is that she will expect you to keep her misery company. In time, she could make you believe its okay to be a hater, too.Successful people dont spend time with haters, but with other successful, positive people. Youll do yourself a favor by removing this person from your life.2. The Envious OneA friend or colleague who is envious wont celebrate your victories or support your dreams. He covets the life youre aspiring to create, in large part because he doesnt believe in his own ability to achieve the same success.Being an employee, a boss, or a co-worker is hard enough. Choose to surround yourself with people who can be genuinely happy for your micro-achievements and champion your long-term aspirations.3. The FlakeThis personality type routinely backs out of commitments and expects you to accommodate her ever-changing schedule (and whims). Your time is valuable, but t he flake doesnt respect that notion. If a friend or associate cant honor your plans, meet you halfway, and arrive on time, then use those instances to state and enforce your boundaries. Learning to take care of yourself first, and respect your time, will also help you in other areas of your life and work.4. The Guilt TripperHeres the problem with guilt You cant dream when someone makes you feel guilty for desiring better. You cant capture value when youve learned to feel guilty for asking to be paid what youre worth. If youre like me, youre mucksmuschenstill trying to resolve some of the guilt learned from childhood or other past experiences. At times, I found it difficult to focus on myself because I was too busy accepting the guilt others were placing on me.Do your best to identify and distance yourself from people who make you feel guilty. This one is hard, because its often family members engaging in this behavior. Its easy for me to say that you should distance yourself from a par ent or a sibling- but that doesnt make it any less true. Ive had to do this myself, and I can tell you Its possible to find a healthy medium between keeping family in your life and detaching from their guilt.5. The Perpetually FearfulThere are people around you who are simply afraid to go for it. They view life through a lens of fear and lack the basic belief that things will work out for the best. That is the exact opposite energy you need, especially while youre starting out.As personal-development legend Bob Proctor said, If you see it in your mind, you will hold it in your hand. Avoid fearful people with limiting beliefs, and embrace your visions of success instead. If you think youre immune to the people listed above, think again. These personality types will overtly or subconsciously influence your life and affect the energy in your space.Want evidence? Spend 24 hours with a friend who cusses like a sailor. Youll start cussing too. That same principle works with hate, envy, fear , and self-doubt.The opposite is also true. If you surround yourself with positive people, youll find yourself more positive and successful.Remember our opening quote from Jim Rohn? Take the necessary steps to ensure the five people closest to you exhibit the traits you want to emulate as you reach for greater personal development and success.More From Inc.Beware Working With Jerks Can Turn You Into a Jerk at Home, Study Shows25 Phrases That Kill Workplace Relationships6 Subtle Signs Your Relationships at Work Are Breaking DownPhoto of woman serious courtesy of Portra/Getty Images.

How to Answer Interview Questions About Handling a Problem
How to Answer Interview Questions About Handling a ProblemHow to Answer Interview Questions About Handling a ProblemCompanies are always looking to hire employees who can solve schwierigkeits. Thats why interviewers often ask candidates about how they have handled challenges in the workplace. Also, questions like Describe a problem you encountered at your last job are a way for interviewers to assess your attitude towards past supervisors/employers and to see if you place blame or take responsibility. How to Answer Interview Questions About Handling Problems When questions of this type are asked, it is best to think of them as a request to share how you have intervened to solve problems in the past, rather than an opportunity to complain about difficult situations at work. Have Examples Ready to Share Prepare examples of how you have addressed problems or met challenges for each job, internship, volunteer, and leadership role included on your resume. Choose problem situations whe re your involvement led to a solution and avoid unsolvable or difficult issues that couldnt be improved or fixed. Remember, employers will be listening to your answer to find out how you resolve issues, deal with conflict, and take the initiative in identifying and resolving problems. Look for examples that showcase abilities that will come in funkfernsprecher in the position youre interviewing for. As with resumes, numbers can be impressive if you drove sales, reduced time, or had a result that can be quantified by metrics, be sure to share the details. Describe the Problem, Your Actions, and the Results For each example, describe the situation with just enough detail to represent the magnitude and nature of the problem. Then state how you specifically assessed the situation and acted to meet the challenge. Emphasize the skills or qualities you tapped to intervene. Include the skills which qualify you for the job. Finally, describe the results which you helped generate or how the situation was improved. Your stories dont need to represent monumental achievements small successes which illustrate your key strengths are sufficient. Avoid rambling, and also make sure not to speak negatively about co-workers or managers. You might, for example, share a story like During my first year after an HR manager at ABC company I noticed that new recruits were leaving at a higher rate than I had experienced at previous employers. I decided to create a survey to identify the reasons for turnover. I found that they werent satisfied with the level of feedback and mentoring which they were receiving. I established protocols for managers to meet at regular intervals with new employees during the first year and set up a mentoring program. During my second year turnover of new recruits was reduced by 30% and surveys indicated a higher level of job satisfaction. Tips for Answering This Question As you are thinking through how you would answer this question, use these tips to help you formulate a strong answer. Practice storytelling Avoid a long pause and a rambling, unfocused story by rehearsing answers. Have a sense of some of your big accomplishments from each position so that you can provide a coherent, relevant story. Remember employers will be interested in seeing how you think and problem-solve.Choose a good example This is a situation where a generic answer, such as, I always respond to problems quickly and efficiently doesnt suit. Choose examples that will put your relevant skills on display. Avoid pointing fingers or placing blame, and keep language neutral when describing the cause of the problem. Make sure to emphasize results ?Be specific about what you accomplished. If you can include numbers, such as, This increased sales 10% year-over-year or, This lowered overtime costs by $1,000 a month, be sure to mention them. Tips for Answering When You Dont Have Work Experience If you do not have work experience, its okay to use examples from s chool. Just try to keep it meaningful and highlight your resourcefulness. When answering the question, illustrate the example. Explain the situation and its importance, what went wrong, what impact the problem could have, what you did to fix it, and the ultimate results. Sample AnswerA good example would be, I had a major paper due for my biology class. It was an extensive research project and accounted for a big part of my grade. I was almost finished and was just writing the conclusion when a thunderstorm hit and the power went out. My professor has a strict lateness policy and accepts no excuses, so I knew I had to hand it in the next morning on time or Id fail the assignment. I used my phone to look up coffee shops that were open all night and that had wireless internet. I did back up my work frequently, so I only lost about a page and a half. I was able to go to the coffee shop, rewrite the sections of the paper I lost, add in my sources and proofread it. I handed it in the nex t morning on time, and ended up getting an A on the paper and in the class. In this example, the candidate shows that he is prepared he regularly backs up his work, so that shows he is careful and conscientious. When the power went out, he thought to look up area locations where he could work, demonstrating quick thinking and resourcefulness when faced with a problem. He found a way to get the work done and met the deadline, without sacrificing quality. Thats an outstanding example that shows youre a good employee.
